FORMATION OF BACTERIAL BIOFILMS

Posizione formation of bacterial biofilms in food: identification and characterisation biofilms are communities of microorganisms attached to surfaces, enclosed in a protective matrix. in food, these biofilms are critical because they can harbour pathogens, increasing the risk of foodborne illnesses. their resistance to disinfectants makes them difficult to eliminate, compromising food safety. additionally, biofilms can negatively impact food quality by altering its taste, texture, and shelf life. therefore, understanding and controlling biofilms is essential for the food industry to ensure safe and high-quality products. in this project, we will analyse the biofilm-forming capacity of bacteria isolated from food, whose genomes have been sequenced and are part of our microorganism collection. to do this, we will grow these isolates under various static and dynamic conditions at temperatures relevant to the food industry, and we will analyse changes in their behaviour. the project objectives are: • identification of possible genes of interest related to biofilm formation using bioinformatics tools. • characterisation of biofilm growth when exposed to different antimicrobial components. • analysis of gene expression of the previously identified genes using molecular techniques (rt-qpcr). caratteristiche del candidato lingue stranieree' richiesta la conoscenza di almeno una delle seguenti lingue inglese: buono (b2-c1) spagnolo: buono (b2-c1) esperienze lavorative precedentiundergrad, graduate or master. work will be adjusted attending to the student level. basic micr...

Posizione overview: the student is expected to be involved in a european project hort2the future related to the use of new irrigation technologies in order to avoid soil compaction and soil borne diseases. key responsibilities: during the stay, the student is expected to work in different activities of the project with multidisciplinary tasks. this will involve greenhouse trials and laboratory assays to study the response of plant infection to micro and nanobubbles in the irrigation water. distinct molecular biology methodologies will be applied as • dna extraction and quantification. • quantitative pcr. in order to identify and quantify the pathogen also, plant physiological measurements will be carried out as photosynthesis rate, stomata conductance, transpiration and root growth parameters. skills developed: • technical skills: soil and plant sampling , lab work, use of photosynthesis chamber, winrhizo • soft skills: communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, leadership, etc. reflection: with this stay, the student will gain knowledge about new techniques (macro and nano-bubbles) applied in the irrigation system in order to manage soil compaction, the lack of oxygenation in the root system and soil borne infections. the student will be integrated in the research team (3 senior researchers, 1 post-doctoral research, 2 master student and 1 technician) participating in the on-line meetings with other european partners. caratteristiche del candidato lingue stranieree' richiesta la conoscenza di almeno una delle seguenti lingue inglese: buono (b2-c...
