The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. We operate a variety of radio telescopes around the globe, including the famous Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. We are seeking a skilled Telescope Mechanic to join our team at the VLA. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing routine maintenance service to scientific investigations through the construction, installation, test, repair, and maintenance of radio telescopes and associated equipment used to collect data for observers. The position is based at the VLA, located 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. - Perform routine maintenance, installation, testing, calibration, repair, and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and limited electronic components on all telescopes and related equipment. - Welding and fabricating in a shop or outdoors in various weather conditions. - Expected to weld stick, mig, and tig, working with different types of metal such as mild steel, aluminum, and stainless. - Provide assistance in the operation and testing of telescope and operating equipment when required. - Assist in the functional evaluation of newly installed equipment to evaluate system performance under actual operating conditions. - May assist Telescope Operators with receiver/equipment changes. - Assist in taking and maintaining inventory of parts. - Maintain records of maintenance activities, using computer systems as required. - Assist with indoor/outdoor painting when required. - Maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition. - Assist other maintenance and support personnel as assigned.
